Hadassah was founded in 1912 by an American Jew, Henrietta Szold. She identified an enormous need for health care in Palestine and set out to provide basic services. From the original two nurses sent to Jerusalem, the Hadassah Medical Organization, which now operates two large medical centers in Jerusalem, has grown and become world renowned for delivering first-class health care for everyone who needs it, regardless of race or religion.
Hadassah also sponsors cutting edge research in numerous health related specialties, and has sent emergency trauma teams world-wide to such places as Kosovo, Rwanda, Turkey, and Kenya. Hadassah also provides other programs such as job training, and Young Judaea for our own children in the United States. Hadassah now has 300,000 members, with chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico and Hadassah International includes units in 34 countries on four continents. Hadassah is the largest volunteer organization in the United States committed to healing, teaching, and research on the physical, spiritual and cultural levels.
The Corvallis Chapter of Hadassah was organized in 1964. We meet monthly for educational, social, and fund raising activities. Through the Ruth Goldberg Memorial Fund, Hadassah is able to provide awards to the youth of our area, enabling them to attend Young Judaea sponsored camps and Israel programs. Corvallis Hadassah is egalitarian and welcomes all. Membership benefits include a monthly subscription to Hadassah Magazine.
In the fall of 2006 the Corvallis Mahon group started it's third year. Machon is a group of Jewish women who get together once a month to informally discuss ideas on various topics concerning Judaism and Jewish Identity. Last year we explored Israel and our feelings about Zionism. This year the topic of choice is "They Lit the Way: Extraordinary Women Leading Jewish Lives." Each year, the group decided which new topic we will discuss. Meetings are held in participants' homes and leadership is shared. Materials are supplied by Hadassah. New Members are always welcome.
